An engaging field trip opportunity for families, homeschoolers, and educators, October 21–24.
Sometimes the best classroom comes with wheels.
The Freedom 250 Mobile Museum is visiting Chennault Aviation & Military Museum October 21–24, 2026, allowing Northeast Louisiana families to explore America’s founding through interactive exhibits—and admission is FREE! The traveling museum is open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. daily.
For parents and educators looking for a meaningful outing, this is a chance to trade a little textbook time for curiosity, conversation, and discovery.
Step Inside America’s Founding Story
Part of the celebration of 250 years of American independence, the Freedom Truck brings an interactive look at the nation’s beginnings directly to communities. Visitors can explore the people, ideas, and events connected to the fight for independence.
The program also offers a virtual walk-through and curriculum resources for elementary, middle school, and high school students, making it easy to connect the visit with learning before and afterward. Explore the Freedom Truck and educational resources here: freedom250.org
Turn Your Visit Into a Homeschool Field Trip
You don’t need a complicated lesson plan to make this outing count. Try these simple activities:
- Before you go: Find 1776 and 2026 on a timeline. Ask, “What does independence mean?”
- During your visit: Have each child choose one person, idea, or event to investigate. Younger learners can look for something they recognize and something that surprises them.
- Ask thoughtful questions: “Whose story is being told?” “Whose perspective would you like to learn more about?” “What would you ask someone who lived during that time?”
- Afterward: Invite children to draw their favorite discovery, record a short “museum reporter” video, or share three things they learned.
- Keep exploring: Older students can compare something they encountered with a primary source or another historical account.
Educators can adapt these ideas for a class discussion, journal entry, or small-group project. No lengthy worksheet required—sometimes a good question does the heavy lifting!
A Local Museum We Love

With more than 11,000 artifacts, the museum explores General Claire Chennault, the Flying Tigers, Selman Field, aviation, and generations of military service. Regular museum admission is free, helping make these learning opportunities accessible to families.
If you’d like to explore the permanent exhibits during your outing, plan around their regular hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. The visiting mobile museum has separate hours of 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
