🦃 Stuffing vs. Dressing: The Southern Secret That Steals the Show

Let’s clear something up once and for all — stuffing and dressing are not the same thing! Stuffing is made with white or French bread and can be cooked inside the turkey. Dressing, on the other hand, is that beloved Southern favorite made with cornbread and baked separately in its own dish (because we like ours golden and a little crispy on top).

But here’s where the magic happens — whether you’re Team Stuffing or Team Dressing, we've got a magic ingredient: sage sausage.

That’s right! Two packages of Jimmy Dean Sage Sausage take this Thanksgiving classic from “good” to “gone in 60 seconds.” The rich, savory flavor adds depth, warmth, and just the right hint of spice.

🍽️ Southern Sage Sausage Cornbread Dressing or French Bread Stuffing

Ingredients:

  • 2 packages Jimmy Dean Sage Sausage
  • 1-2 large green bell peppers, chopped
  • 1 large sweet onion, chopped
  • 4 stalks of celery, chopped
  • Bushel of Fresh Parsley, chopped
  • 8–10 cups crumbled cornbread or cubed oven-dried French Bread (a mix of homemade and store-bought works great)
  • 2–3 cups chicken or turkey broth (get the juices from the turkey, if possible)
  • 2 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 1 tsp ground sage (optional — the sausage adds plenty)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 8 tbsp salted butter, melted
  • (Optional but highly encouraged: 1–2 cooked, shredded chicken breast for a heartier twist!)

Don't feel like cooking, JAC's Craft Smokehouse has you covered with all the meat and fixins'! Orders must be placed by 11/21/25.

Instructions:

  1. Brown the sausage in a large skillet, breaking it into crumbles. Remove and set aside, leaving a little grease for flavor.
  2. Sauté the onion, parsley, celery, and green pepper in the sausage drippings until tender and fragrant.
  3. In a large bowl, combine cornbread or oven-dried French bread cubes, sausage, vegetables, and seasonings.
  4. If you’re feeling adventurous, add the shredded chicken — it gives the dressing a delicious, meaty richness.
  5. Gradually add broth until the mixture is moist but not soggy. Stir in melted butter.
  6. Spoon into a buttered casserole dish and bake at 350°F for 35–45 minutes, until the top is golden and slightly crisp.

Serve warm with gravy (or straight from the pan — we won’t judge).

💛 Whether you call it stuffing or dressing, one thing’s for sure: add that sage sausage, and you’ll be the Thanksgiving hero everyone talks about until Christmas.
